Gear-drive pressure washers have a transmission between the pump and the engine that reduces the speed of the pump down to similar speeds to those of belt-drive pumps. These machines give you the benefit of being able to draw water from a non-pressurized source like a tank. They also tend to last longer because of the slower pump speed and the added oil capacity.
